As Nigeria faces different challenges ranging from illegal mining, and attacks of mining staff across the country in the face of insecurity, there’s an urgent need to embrace a solution to factors militating against the success of mining and forestry in the country.

Over the years, the mining industry despite its potential has failed to help the country navigate through economic diversification because of the myriad of challenges bewildering the sector.

According to research, the mining sector is facing a series of challenges which need urgent fixes to maximize its Potential.

The challenges include Environmental and climate change pressures, trade wars and geopolitics, changing and uncertain demand, technology changes, and a global maintenance skills shortage.

Addressing these challenges is a priority for the long-term sustainability of mining.

Also, the forest industry is a particularly important contributor to national economies. It provides a wide variety of products, including building materials, food, fuel, medicines, and raw materials for further processing.

Forests also help support agriculture by reducing wind speed, thus protecting crops and water sources. Trees also help stabilise soil conditions and regulate water flow, not to mention provide shelter for natural pollinators and predators of agricultural pests. Ultimately, all of these result in enhanced yields.

Despite its economic impact, the sector is underperforming due to various challenges which include a shortage of talent, expensive construction of logging roads, space constraints, variation of tree species, deforestation, climate change, and location challenges amongst others.

To stem these trends and maximize the potential of the two industries, FORESTRY AND MINING PROTECTION OF NIGERIA has made a resilient move in overcoming all challenges and building human capacity for economic growth.

The Nigerian Uniform Organization has been duly registered and approved on the 31st day of May 2021 as Limited by Guarantee with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

The organization has also received approval from the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment and other relevant agencies of government with the responsibility to protect the Mining Sector and to also mediate intending Mining conflicts between the Host Communities and the Mining Companies in Nigeria.

As insecurity bites hard on all sectors of the economy including the mining industry, the organization moved to protect both investors and workers for a common goal.

The organization established a professional security corp in all Mining Host Communities to promote Peace, Tranquillity and Economic growth in the country.

This organization has embarked on a series of sensitization and education of citizens of all ages on the dangers of illegal mining on the health of citizens.

They also educate and train youths on how to be vigilant and assist security agencies by reporting illegal mining activities in their areas and also empower them through employment creation.

To put an end to the fight between host communities and investors, the organization is educating communities and citizens on the need for peaceful resolution of mining-related disputes and encouraging miners to promote the provision of corporate social responsibilities in areas of
Portable Water, Health Facilities, And Educational Institutions Amongst Others.

The organization also Promotes Safe And Decent Forest Practices By Educating Host Communities On The Benefits Of Decent And Proper Forest Uses In The Overall Safety Of The Communities.

FORESTRY AND MINING PROTECTION OF NIGERIA not only care about society but also embraces good worker welfare in line with international practices.

Visa processing for 2024 Hajj reaches advanced stage – NAHCON

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) says it has reached an advanced stage in the processing of entry visa for the 2024 intending pilgrims to Saudi Arabia.

The Executive Chairman, NAHCON, Malam Jalal Arabi, said this at the Maiden Stakeholders Summit on Nigeria’s Hajj and Umrah Industry on Thursday in Abuja.

Arabi said that the commission had scheduled May 16, for the inaugural flight of the 2024 Hajj.

He said that the approved air carriers were ready to transport all Nigerian pilgrims to Saudi Arabia from over 10 departures centres.

” We as a board of NAHCON and team will be meeting with the air carriers later today to fashion out the departure centres and of course our partners in the aviation sector will also join us,” he said.

The NAHCON boss said that all pilgrims from states would visit Madinah for the maximum of four days before the commencement of Hajj rites.

” This is major change from the operations of Hajj in the last decade. All stakeholders are working to provide effective and efficient services to the guest of Allah (pilgrims).

” And this underscores the importance of this summit. The preparations for this year’s Hajj is characterised by different challenges but to God be the glory we are able to overcome the challenges.

” I can proudly say that close to 65,500 pilgrims of the States Pilgrims Boards, Agencies and Commissions and the Tour operators will be participating in this year’s Hajj,” he said.

He said that the commission under his watch was ready to partner, collaborate with stakeholders and work as a team for the successful conduct of the 2024 Hajj operation.

Arabi lauded Vice-President Kashim Shettima for his continued support for the commission.

He also expressed appreciation to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III for his continued guidance to the leadership of NAHCON.

Earlier, the Rector of the institute, Prof. Mohammed Maiturare, said the summit was intended to serve as a crucial platform for fostering cooperation and collaboration between NAHCON, states pilgrims broads, tour operators and all stakeholders in Hajj industry.

” Through open dialogue, knowledge sharing and a commitment to working together we can address challenges and potential destructions that might arise and ensure the successful execution of the 2024 Hajj,” he said.

The reports gathered that the two-day summit was organised by the Hajj Institute of Nigeria established by the NAHCON.

FG approves salary increase for civil servants

The Federal Government has approved a substantial increase in salary ranging from 25% to 35% for civil servants across various consolidated salary structures.

This augmentation applies to the six remaining consolidated salary structures, namely the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS), and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).

A statement released by NTA on Tuesday evening, April 30 reads;

The Federal Government has approved an increase of between 25% and 35% in salary Increase for Civil Servants on the remaining six Consolidated Salary Structures

The Salary Structure is the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS) and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).

It will be recalled that those in the Tertiary Education and Health Sectors had already received their increases which involved Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) and Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS) for Universities.

For Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, it involved the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS) and Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS).

The Health Sector also benefitted through the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and Consolidated Health Sector Salary Structure (CONHESS).

A statement signed by the Head of Press, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), Emmanuel Njoku said the increases take effect from 1st January 2024.

The Federal Government has also approved increases In pension of between 20% and 28% for pensioners on the Defined Benefits Scheme in respect to the above-mentioned six consolidated salary structures with effect from 1st January 2024.
