Body of Arizona Woman Found After Grand Canyon Flash Flood Tragedy

The body of Chenoa Nickerson, a 33-year-old woman from Gilbert, Arizona, who went missing after a flash flood in Grand Canyon National Park, was recovered on Sunday, according to park officials.

Nickerson’s body was discovered by a group rafting on the Colorado River around 11:30 a.m., days after she was swept away by floodwaters on Thursday afternoon.

National Park Service rangers recovered her body and transported it by helicopter to the rim, where it was handed over to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s office.

In a heartfelt statement, Nickerson’s family expressed their grief and thanked searchers and supporters for their efforts, asking for privacy during this difficult time. “Chenoa’s light will forever be a part of all of us,” her family said, adding that they will honor her memory by cherishing the joy and love she brought into their lives.

Nickerson was hiking near Havasu Creek, roughly a half-mile from its confluence with the Colorado River, when a flash flood struck. She was not wearing a life jacket at the time, park officials noted. Her husband, who was also in the area, was among more than 100 people safely evacuated following the flood.

The flash flood left several hikers stranded near Beaver Falls, a popular tourist spot known for its waterfalls, which turned from turquoise to chocolate brown due to the flood. Rescue operations, involving the Arizona National Guard and Blackhawk helicopters, continued throughout the weekend, focusing on the Beaver Falls area.

Nickerson’s sister, Tamara Morales, praised the National Park Service and rescue teams for their tireless efforts to search the dangerous terrain with limited communication methods. Governor Katie Hobbs had activated the Arizona National Guard to assist in evacuating stranded hikers.
