“Customs Duty Waiver Expected to Slash Food Prices Soon”
Food prices are set to drop significantly as the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) implements duty waivers on imported consumables, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive.
Comptroller General of the NCS, Adewale Adeniyi, announced on Tuesday that the initiative is expected to commence within the coming week. During a joint press briefing with other security agencies in Abuja, Adeniyi provided details on the upcoming changes, noting that the Ministry of Finance is in the final stages of preparing the waiver guidelines. “Once these guidelines are complete, the Customs Service will immediately move forward with the implementation,” he assured.
Adeniyi emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling the ongoing food inflation crisis. He highlighted that the duty waiver is a strategic component of broader efforts to alleviate economic pressures. Additionally, measures such as the distribution of food items from the national grain reserves are being pursued to stabilize food supply.
The Comptroller-General stressed the importance of a balanced approach in implementing the waiver. While the initiative aims to reduce food costs for consumers, it is crucial to consider its impact on local farmers. The NCS is working closely with the Ministry of Finance to ensure that the waiver’s benefits are fairly distributed among all stakeholders, including farmers and consumers.

Yobe Govt Donates N100m to Support Borno Flood Victims
Yobe State Governor, His Excellency Hon. Mai Mala Buni CON, has extended a N100 million donation to the Borno State Government to aid victims of the recent Maiduguri floods. The announcement was made during a sympathy visit to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum in Maiduguri on Saturday.
In addition to the state donation, Governor Buni also pledged a personal contribution of food items worth N50 million to assist those affected by the floods. He described the humanitarian crisis as devastating and urged everyone to come forward with support.
“Yobe and Borno states are like twins, sharing similar hardships. We must stand by each other in times of need,” Buni stated.
The Yobe Governor also expressed condolences for those who lost their lives in the disaster and wished a quick recovery for the injured.
Governor Zulum expressed gratitude to Governor Buni and the people of Yobe State for their generosity and solidarity. He highlighted the strong bond between the two states, noting that Buni’s administration has further strengthened the unity between Borno and Yobe.
“The people of Yobe and Borno are one family, and this support reinforces that connection. We deeply appreciate the gesture,” Zulum said.
