FCT Car Owners Abandon Vehicles for Commercial Transport Amid Fuel Shortages
FCT Car Owners Abandon Vehicles for Commercial Transport Amid Fuel Shortages
Car owners in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are increasingly abandoning their vehicles due to ongoing fuel shortages and lengthy queues at filling stations, turning to commercial transportation as a more viable alternative. The crisis, exacerbated by the recent removal of the petrol subsidy, has left many residents frustrated and struggling to find reliable solutions.
In discussions with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, several residents expressed their dissatisfaction with the persistent fuel scarcity. Mrs. Rebecca Takaa, a public servant from Usuma Dam, revealed that she had stopped using her car due to the overwhelming fuel queues. “I can’t bear the hassle of waiting for hours to refuel. I’ve switched to commercial transport, which is still costly but less burdensome than buying fuel,” Takaa said. She remains hopeful for a swift resolution from the government.
Mr. Alu Joshua, a commercial transporter based in Bwari, reported significant disruptions to his business. “The queues are time-consuming, reducing the number of trips we can make and impacting our earnings. We need government intervention to prevent these recurrent shortages,” Joshua stated.
Another resident, Mr. David Ogedengbe, highlighted the difficulties he faced when he turned to the black market after being unable to purchase petrol for nearly a week. “I had to buy fuel at nearly N1,500 per litre from the black market, which damaged my car’s fuel pump due to its poor quality,” Ogedengbe lamented.
Business owners are also feeling the strain. Miss Jennifer Ibrahim, who operates a hairdressing salon in Nyanya, said the soaring costs of black market fuel are affecting her operations. “Black market prices have doubled, and with unstable electricity, I’m limited in how many customers I can serve. This situation is exhausting,” Ibrahim added, calling for urgent government action.
The price of petrol in the FCT has surged, with reports of it reaching N1,000 per litre in some areas, while black market sellers are charging between N10,000 and N15,000 for a 10-litre gallon.
Despite assurances from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) that measures are being taken to restore fuel supply, residents continue to grapple with the adverse effects of the ongoing shortage.
