Gov. Sule Approves Immediate Implementation of Nasarawa Workers’ Pending Promotions

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has given the green light for the immediate implementation of all outstanding promotions for civil servants in the state.

The governor made this announcement during a meeting with organized labor unions and their affiliates on Monday in Lafia, responding to a request by union leaders to address pending promotions dating back to 2018 before rolling out the new N70,000 minimum wage.

During the meeting, Governor Sule emphasized the government’s commitment to commence the payment of the new minimum wage in August, including three months’ arrears from May, June, and July. He assured that the state is prepared to deliver on its promise of a new wage structure, with August’s salary reflecting the updated amount.

“I have assured the people of Nasarawa that we will implement the new minimum wage as soon as it was finalized and signed into law. We are working out a payment template that will allow us to settle the arrears and begin the new wage in August,” Sule stated.

Additionally, the governor reminded the labor union of his prior commitment to resolve all pending promotions, directing the state’s Accountant General to begin implementing these promotions immediately, with one month of the July arrears to be paid as requested by the union.

Governor Sule also agreed to the union’s proposal to establish a minimum wage implementation committee, which will begin work once the necessary template is received from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC).

“The committee will await the NSIWC’s template before negotiations with the union start, as per your request,” Sule added.

In response, Mr. Ismaila Okoh, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), expressed his appreciation for the governor’s efforts on behalf of the workers over the past five years. He also acknowledged the governor’s intention to implement the new minimum wage.

However, Okoh emphasized that the workers prioritize the implementation of their pending promotions, noting that the new minimum wage discussions will follow once the NSIWC’s template is received.

“The implementation of the outstanding promotions should take precedence, and we can address the minimum wage afterward in line with the collective bargaining process,” Okoh stated.
