House of Reps moves to resolve FG, ASUU disagreement on outstanding salaries
The House of Representatives has resolved to intervene in the lingering disagreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over unpaid eight months salary.
The resolution was sequel to a unanimous adoption of a motion by Rep. Paul Nnamchi (LP-Enugu state) and co- sponsored by Rep. Aminu Jaji (APC-Zamfara) Rep. Julius Ihonvbere (APC-Edo) and Rep. Lilian Orogbu (LP-Anambra) at plenary on Thursday.
Moving the motion, Nnamchi said that university lecturers play a crucial role in the education system by providing knowledge, guidance, and mentorship to future leaders.
He said that ensuring a stable and motivated academic workforce is critical for educational institution development.

The lawmaker said that ASUU, a recognised body of academic professionals in Nigeria is committed to the advancement of education and research within the university.
He recalled that in 2022, ASUU members went on an eight months strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to honour past agreements with the union.
Nnamchi said that strike actions, aimed at addressing systemic issues, have unintentionally led to financial consequences for dedicated lecturers who participated in the strike.
“Section 17 of the Constitution provides that the state social order is founded on ideals of freedom, equality and justice and in furtherance of the social order, government actions shall be humane.
“Disturbed that Federal University lecturers are facing financial hardships and distress due to eight months’ salary owed as a result of the ASUU strike, with adverse consequences on students’ educational experiences and overall well-being.
“Worried that the unpaid salaries can negatively affect lecturers’ morale, job satisfaction, and teaching effectiveness, thereby affecting the quality of education provided to students.
“The educational success and prospects of students are intricately linked to the financial security and dedication of teachers.
“Resolving this issue is crucial for the stability and excellence of universities, the welfare of educators, and the nation’s economy,” he said.
In his ruling, the Speaker of the house, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas mandated Committees on University Education, Finance, Appropriations, Labour and Productivity, and Legislative Compliance to interface with ASUU and the Federal Government.
He charged the committee to resolve the eight months outstanding salary of lecturers following the ‘no work no pay’ policy and report back within two weeks for further legislative actions.

FG Intervention Programs Aim to Benefit All Nigerians, Says Minister
Alhaji Muhammad Idris, Minister of Information, has affirmed that the Federal Government’s intervention programs are designed to benefit all Nigerians.
Speaking during a sensitization event on the Renewed Hope Agenda, President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s policy framework, in Yola on Thursday, Idris emphasized the wide-reaching nature of these programs. Represented by Rhoda Maina, Head of the Federal Information Resource Center in Yola, the minister outlined various initiatives aimed at improving citizens’ lives.
These initiatives include the disbursement of over N2.9 billion for a student loan scheme, empowerment programs, and the Digital and Creative Enterprise Program. Additional efforts focus on consumer credit, a natural gas initiative, housing, Nano business support, and the National Youth Talents Export Program.
Mr. Jonah Agye, Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Adamawa, expressed the agency’s readiness to collaborate with federal and state agencies to promote these initiatives at the grassroots level. He urged participants to spread the word in their communities and encouraged public support for government policies.
In his remarks, Mr. James Iliya, Adamawa State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, expressed gratitude to the federal government and President Tinubu for the interventions. He urged beneficiaries to make the most of these opportunities to improve their lives. Iliya also noted that Adamawa State aligns with the Federal Government’s policies to ensure its residents benefit from these initiatives.
Alhaji Idris Shuaibu, chairman of the event, commended the Federal Government’s efforts and advised those implementing the programs to ensure that they reach the most vulnerable citizens.

Obi further stressed that his priority is to address pressing national issues, including bringing millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms and combating poverty. He categorically denied any agreement to serve as a vice president, saying, “For the avoidance of doubt, I never stated at any time that I would be vice president to anyone.”
Despite the rumors, Obi reaffirmed his dedication to Nigeria’s development, insisting that true progress can be achieved without necessarily holding political office.
