Nigerian Youths Showcase Culinary Skills in Korean Cooking Event

Seven Nigerian youths displayed their culinary talents by preparing five Korean dishes during a cooking event organized by the Korean Cultural Centre in Nigeria (KCCN) on Wednesday in Abuja. The participants crafted traditional dishes such as Ganjang Jjimdak, Bibimyeon, Gochujang Jjigae, Tteokbokki, and Japchae.

The event, which served as a preparatory phase for an upcoming competition scheduled for August 16 and 17, provided the young chefs with an opportunity to hone their skills and explore Korean cuisine. According to the participants, KCCN not only offered a platform for showcasing their creativity but also helped them discover hidden talents in Korean culinary arts.

Pearl Ogbalu, one of the participants who prepared Ganjang Jjimdak, expressed excitement at making the dish for the first time. Despite some feedback that the dish was too spicy, she saw it as constructive criticism to improve her performance in the competition.

Julia Anams, another participant, shared her enthusiasm for preparing Gochujang Jjigae, a spicy Korean stew, noting that it brought an authentic Korean flavor when paired with white rice. She highlighted KCCN’s role in educating Nigerian youths about Korean culture through various classes.

Esther Raymond, who prepared Bibimyeon, described the experience as wonderful and was surprised at how well the dish was received. Cynthia Mmadubueze, who made Tteokbokki, credited online tutorials and recipe handbooks provided by KCCN for her success in creating the dish.

KCCN’s Culture and Event Officer, Habiba Yakubu, explained that the cooking class aimed to introduce Nigerians to the culture of ‘Jang,’ a key element in Korean cuisine. She emphasized the importance of time management and creativity for the contestants, who will be required to blend Nigerian and Korean ingredients in the upcoming competition. Yakubu encouraged the participants to be punctual and mindful of the differences between Korean and Nigerian cuisines as they prepare for the event.
