North Korean Defects to South Korea by Crossing Heavily Fortified Border on Foot

A North Korean man has successfully defected to South Korea by crossing the heavily fortified border between the two nations on foot, the South Korean military confirmed on Tuesday. This rare direct defection occurred along the eastern front of the Korean Peninsula, a region heavily guarded and mined.

While tens of thousands of North Koreans have fled to the South since the end of the Korean War in 1953, most defect via China and other third countries like Thailand. Direct crossings of the inter-Korean border are uncommon due to the heavy military presence and natural obstacles.

The South Korean military intercepted the defector, who is suspected to be a North Korean soldier, and handed him over to the relevant authorities for investigation. “No unusual troop movements were observed in North Korea at the time of the defection,” the Joint Chiefs of Staff reported, adding that they could not confirm the exact details or motives behind the defection at this time.

According to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, the defector is a senior sergeant in the North Korean army and received assistance from the South Korean military in his escape. Local reports indicate that the man, dressed in a North Korean military uniform, was intercepted while walking along a seaside road in eastern Gangwon Province.

This incident marks the second time in two weeks that a North Korean has managed to cross directly into the South. On August 8, another defector crossed the inter-Korean maritime border in the Yellow Sea.

Defections from North Korea sharply declined in 2020 when the country sealed its border with China due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in 2023, following Pyongyang’s reopening of the Chinese border, 196 North Koreans successfully defected to the South, a significant increase from the 67 recorded in 2022. The South Korean government has observed a rising trend of defections among North Korea’s elite, including diplomats and students abroad.
