NPSA tasks INEC on the deployment of effective technological devices
NPSA tasks INEC on the deployment of effective technological devices
The Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA) has tasked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the deployment and use of technological devices that are well-tested, protected from hacking, and replace malfunctioning for effective functioning during the 2023 General elections.
The association also asked INEC to ensure seamless operational and logistics arrangements to prevent delays in the opening and closing of the accreditation and voting process, and the counting, collation, and transmission of results.
This recommendation was contained in a communique issued at the weekend at the end of NPSA’s two-day roundtable discussion tagged “Attaining Electoral Integrity in 2023 General Elections: Pointers to Policy,” held in Abuja.

The Association asked INEC to map out areas of insecurity in the country based on levels of insecurity and levels of risks, through the Electoral Risk Management Tool [ERM Tool] it has developed and takes preventive measures with security agencies through its Inter-Agency Consultative Committee for Election Security (ECCES) to diminish the risks.
The association further called for vigorous voter education and related civic enlightenment programs on the electoral, particularly accreditation and voting process and the responsibility of the electorate and Nigerians generally to dispel and counter fake news and related misinformation about the elections, and to ensure the conduct of free and fair elections.
The political scholars observed the power of incumbency, including the deployment of security agencies and the full panoply of the power of the state at federal and state levels, abused with impunity for partisan, unfair electoral advantage ahead of the election
They held that Nigeria can have electoral integrity when the critical stakeholders respect the electoral laws guiding electoral conduct throughout the electoral cycle through which a collective will of the people is achieved, adding that “electoral integrity has a critical citizen-action content in the electoral process”.
NPSA President, Professor Hassan Salihu, who read the communique on behalf of the group noted that “electoral integrity also depends on the existence of real, impartial opportunities for addressing grievances.”

Peter Obi Dismisses Claims of Accepting 2027 Vice Presidential Role
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has refuted claims that he agreed to become a vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 elections. The former Anambra State Governor addressed the issue via a series of posts on his official X account on Saturday, accusing certain groups of misinterpreting his recent interview.
Obi emphasized that his remarks during the News Central TV interview had been deliberately distorted by propagandists, and he reiterated his unwavering commitment to the Labour Party and Nigeria’s progress.

Clarifying his stance, Obi stated, “I am not focused on 2027 when Nigerians are grappling with hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other urgent challenges.” He noted that he is open to partnerships, but only with individuals whose intentions align with advancing the country, not capturing state power.
Obi further stressed that his priority is to address pressing national issues, including bringing millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms and combating poverty. He categorically denied any agreement to serve as a vice president, saying, “For the avoidance of doubt, I never stated at any time that I would be vice president to anyone.”
Despite the rumors, Obi reaffirmed his dedication to Nigeria’s development, insisting that true progress can be achieved without necessarily holding political office.

“Our goal is to engage with voters on a personal level,” said the Director General of the group, Hon. Felix Akhabue (aka Joefel). “We believe that face-to-face interactions are incredibly powerful. They allow us to share our candidate’s message directly and listen to the issues that matter most to the people.”
The door-to-door campaign includes basically to canvass support for Okpebholo and distributing informational brochures, answering questions about the candidate’s platform, and assisting voters with any election-related inquiries. Additionally, volunteers are equipped with materials to help people register to vote and find their polling places.
The campaign’s strategy reflects a broader trend among their candidates as they seek to connect with constituents in a more personal and impactful way. By engaging directly with voters, the campaign aims to build stronger relationships and support and increase turnout at the polls.
