NYSC says reports it rejected SLT Poly graduates untrue

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has denied reports that it refused to register Science and Laboratory Technology (SLT), graduates at its Gombe State Orientation Camp.

The reports had alleged that Polytechnic graduates, who studied SLT, were denied access for not having professional certificates of the National Institute for Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT).

NYSC Coordinator in Gombe, Mrs Chinwe Nwachuku, while reacting to the claims, declared them as “untrue and baseless”.

“No SLT graduate was denied registration; all graduates who showed up in Gombe were registered and are already undergoing their orientation course.

“In Gombe camp, I am not aware of any SLT graduate not registered. We registered everyone with or without license.

“I am aware that some of them came without license, but we registered them because the headquarters gave the directive to register all, with or without license.

“Nobody was denied registration as far as Gombe camp is concerned,” she said.

The state coordinator appealed to peddlers of such fake news to always fact check their stories before publishing, to avoid misleading the public.

Corroborating Nwachukwu, Ms Oluwabunmi Alfred, a graduate of SLT Microbiology from Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igbo-Ora, told the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) that she registered without hassles.

“My registration was seamless; I wonder why anyone would be spreading such fake news.”

Similarly, Mr Luka Shekwolo, an SLT Physics and Electrical graduate from Nasarawa State Polytechnics, Lafia, said that the story claiming that they were denied registration is false.

“I was registered in spite of not having the NISLT professional certification.

“If SLT graduates were denied, I will not be here; so, the report is entirely false because I am enjoying myself in Gombe camp.”

We’ll provide enabling environment for corps members to maximise potential- Gov Yahaya

Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State said his administration would continue to provide environment conducive for corps members serving in the state to maximise their potential and achieve their dreams in life.

Yahaya stated this in Amada, Akko Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday, while declaring open the orientation course for the 2024 Batch ‘B’ Stream I corps members.

Represented by Mr Inuwa Ibrahim, the state commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Yahaya said his administration remained committed to the development of youths in the state by providing the right platforms for them to become self-reliant and employed.

He said policies and programmes aimed at supporting the youths in the state to develop themselves had been initiated, hence urged corps members to take advantage of such policies to maximise their potential.

“We will continually ensure that as youths, you have an enabling environment to maximise your potential in keeping with the ideals of the NYSC Scheme.

“This we will do by providing the needed support that will improve the scheme’s capacity to deliver on its mandate.

“It is worthy of note that this administration is youth – friendly with progressive policies, and together as a formidable team, we shall grow a virile environment.

“You are therefore encouraged to be part of the process by making positive impact in your host communities, thereby contributing your quota to nation building,” he said.

While assuring the corps members of their safety, the governor said “let me place on record that Gombe State is very peaceful, so be rest assured of your security, welfare, and general well-being.

“It is a top priority of government as indicated in the robust synergy between the state and security agencies, indicated in the security apparatus deployed to the camp.”

While encouraging those who would like to stay behind after their service year, Yahaya said the state was enriched with abundant human and natural resources, with agricultural potentials that would promote healthy commercial trade.

On her part, Mrs Chinwe Nwachuku, the NYSC state coordinator, Gombe State, said a total of 1,340 corps members comprising 701 males and 639 females were registered for the orientation course.

Nwachuku commended the corps members for exhibiting a high level of discipline since arriving at the camp, urging them to continue on that path while cooperating with camp officials towards achieving “maximum success.””

“You are, therefore, implored to actively participate in all camp activities, promote a tradition of industry at work, develop common ties through shared experiences while creating avenues for long-lasting relationships,” she said.

He commended the state government and all stakeholders for their support to corps members serving in the state while urging them to further support the youths to effectively serve their fatherland.

Embrace entrepreneurial skills, shun negative vices, NYSC DG urges corps members

Director-General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Yushau Ahmed, has urged corps members to embrace entrepreneurial skills that will serve as their life-time assets.

Ahmed stated this at the swearing-in of 2024 Batch A, Stream I orientation course on Tuesday in Ede, Osun.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a total of 1,126 corps members, comprising 573 males and 553 females, were deployed to Osun, in addition to the 1,017 others who joined them from Lagos for the three-week course.

The director-general said that the skills and values imparted in them during their orientation course would serve as life-time assets, which would also guide their actions.

He urged them to recognise the potentials within them, as they navigate the diverse activities which would serve as catalysts for positive change.

“Embrace the diversity of your fellow participants and it is through understanding and collaboration that you can strengthen the fabric of our national unity.

“The orientation course is not just a training programme but a foundation for building responsible youths who are equipped with necessary skills and values for meaningful contributions to the society,” he said.

According to him, the exercise should not be viewed as a mere formality but a sacred commitment to the ideals of service, unity and patriotism.

Ahmed, however, said that the scheme had a system of rewarding hard work and diligence, urging corps members to distinguish themselves as true patriots during their service year.

Also speaking, Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun said that the safety of all corps members in the state was paramount to his administration, assuring that no effort would be spared in creating an environment that would allow them to thrive.

Adeleke called on the corps members to engage themselves with acts that would further foster a sense of nationhood among them while in the state.

“Embrace your roles with dedication and passion, and let the values of diligence, integrity and selflessness guide your actions.

“May your experience be filled with valuable lessons, lifelong friendship and a deepened sense of purpose,” Adeleke said.

Engage properly with media” – NYSC D-G urges state coordinators

The Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, has urged the scheme’s state coordinators to engage with the media properly when the need arises to avoid misrepresentation.

Ahmed made the call on Saturday in Abuja at the opening of the Media Workshop for members of NYSC Top Management and State Coordinators.

The theme of the training is “Leveraging on Media Organisations to Deepen the Contributions of the NYSC to National Development in the Post-Golden Jubilee Era.”

According to him, a minor issue can be escalated if not properly addressed through the right channel.

He said “I consider it most appropriate to use this forum to remind the state coordinators that just as you are the accounting officers in your various secretariats, you are equally the Chief Public Relations Officers of the scheme at the secretariat level.

“Consequently, your actions or inactions in respect of issues affecting the NYSC can impact the scheme positively or negatively.

“Equally, what you may regard as a minor issue or incident may be escalated by the media without proper engagement, and can easily go viral in the social media.”

Ahmed also said there was need to ensure seamless and deepened partnership with the media as they provide veritable platform for the scheme’s side of the story to be heard.

He appreciated the good working relationship the scheme had with the media at the National Directorate Headquarters over the years.

He enjoined the state coordinators to take a cue from the headquarters by ensuring easier accessibility and closer interaction with media correspondents and Bureau Chiefs in their respective states.

“This is the surest way of nipping in the bud, bad publicity occasioned by unbalanced reportage.

“In furtherance of our advocacy efforts, I will soon embark on nationwide visitation of media houses to consolidate the gains so far made in our relationship.

“I thank the media for their support over the years, and assure that the scheme will always make regular and proactive disclosure of our operational policies”, he added.

In his address, the Director, Press and Public Relations, Mr Eddy Megwa, said that the training would open a new chapter that would boost the image of the scheme as it was in line with the director-general’s desire that the corporate image of the scheme be adequately protected.

This, he said, was through robust engagement with the media, the fourth estate of the realm, which constitute veritable partners-in-progress with the scheme since its inception.
