Tourist Helicopter with 22 Aboard Missing in Russia’s Kamchatka Region
A helicopter carrying 22 people, including 19 tourists, has gone missing in Russia’s remote Kamchatka Peninsula, regional authorities reported on Saturday. The helicopter, a Mi-8 model, lost communication at approximately 4:15 p.m. local time (0415 GMT), according to Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov.
Rescue teams have been deployed to search the area, focusing on a river valley along the helicopter’s intended flight path. However, efforts are being hindered by thick fog and poor visibility, local authorities said. Despite the challenging conditions, search operations continued into the night.
The helicopter, a Soviet-era Mi-8 commonly used for transport, had been flying near the Vachkazhets volcano, a popular scenic destination known for its dramatic landscapes, active volcanoes, and geysers. Kamchatka, located in Russia’s far east and nine hours ahead of Moscow, attracts many tourists for its natural beauty.
A source in the emergency services told TASS news agency that the helicopter vanished from radar shortly after takeoff, with no distress signals reported by the crew.
Incidents involving aircraft are not uncommon in Russia’s far eastern regions, where severe weather and rugged terrain often pose hazards to aviation. In August 2021, a Mi-8 helicopter carrying 16 people crashed into a lake in Kamchatka, killing eight. Just a month earlier, a passenger plane attempting to land on the peninsula crashed, resulting in the deaths of all 28 people aboard.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance, as rescue teams work against the clock to locate the missing helicopter and its passengers.

Yobe Govt Donates N100m to Support Borno Flood Victims
Yobe State Governor, His Excellency Hon. Mai Mala Buni CON, has extended a N100 million donation to the Borno State Government to aid victims of the recent Maiduguri floods. The announcement was made during a sympathy visit to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum in Maiduguri on Saturday.
In addition to the state donation, Governor Buni also pledged a personal contribution of food items worth N50 million to assist those affected by the floods. He described the humanitarian crisis as devastating and urged everyone to come forward with support.
“Yobe and Borno states are like twins, sharing similar hardships. We must stand by each other in times of need,” Buni stated.
The Yobe Governor also expressed condolences for those who lost their lives in the disaster and wished a quick recovery for the injured.
Governor Zulum expressed gratitude to Governor Buni and the people of Yobe State for their generosity and solidarity. He highlighted the strong bond between the two states, noting that Buni’s administration has further strengthened the unity between Borno and Yobe.
“The people of Yobe and Borno are one family, and this support reinforces that connection. We deeply appreciate the gesture,” Zulum said.
