EFCC Seeks To Set Aside Committal Order Against Chairman
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has said that it received with shock, report of the ruling. Justice Chizoba Oji of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, Abuja committing the Executive Chairman for contempt over the failure to comply with a November 21st, 2018 order of the court directing the Commission to return seized assets comprising a Range Rover (Super charge) and the sum of N40, 000,000.00 (Forty Million Naira) to the applicant.
In an unsigned statement, EFCC said: “This ruling is surprising as it creates a wrong impression of the person of the Executive Chairman of the EFCC as encouraging impunity. As far as the relationship between the EFCC and the judiciary is concerned, The Executive Chairman, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa has been an apostle of rule of law, due process, and close collaboration between the two institutions in justice administration. As an investigator, and the only Chief Executive of a law enforcement agency who regularly goes to court, the Executive Chairman will not tolerate impunity or disregard any lawful orders of court.”
The law enforcement agency, added: “Abdulrasheed Bawa, in his capacity as Executive Chairman of the EFCC since March 5, 2022, did not disregard any order of court. For the benefit of the public, the said order of the FCT High Court was given on November 21, 2018, three years before Abdulrasheed became EFCC Chairman. This fact is germane as the contempt process is quasi criminal in nature and must be served on the person involved. In this case, Bawa as incumbent chairman of the EFCC, was neither served form 48 nor form 49.
“Despite this fact, the Executive Chairman, upon being aware of the said order of November 21st 2018 had released the Range Rover in question to the Applicant on the 27th of June, 2022 and had approved the process of the release of the remaining N40m.
“Taking into cognizance the procedural lapse in the contempt proceedings the commission has initiated a process to set aside the entire contempt proceedings and committal of the Executive Chairman for contempt.
“Despite the discomfort of this ruling which is seemingly promoted by misinformation, the commission remains committed to working closely with the judiciary in furtherance of the fight against economic and financial crimes in Nigeria.”

Police in Yobe arrest suspected transformer vandal
The Police Command in Yobe said it has arrested one Saminu Garba, 23, for allegedly vandalising transformer cable at State Low-Cost in Damaturu.
DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, spokesman of the command, stated this in a statement in Damaturu on Saturday.
He said personnel of the command arrested Garba in possession of the cable in the area on Thursday when they became suspicious of him.
Abdulkarim said investigation revealed that Garba and two members of his syndicate, Audu Ismail and Abba Mohammed, were allegedly involved in several acts of transformer vandalism in Damaturu and its environs.
The spokesman said the police were on the trail of Ismail and Mohammed, who were still at large.
He said that the state Police Commissioner, Garba Ahmed, has warned vandals to repent and desist from the act or face the wrath of the law.
Abdulkarim appealed to the public to assist the police with credible information to effectively fight crime.

Police arrest 6 suspected phone snatchers in Niger
The Police Command in Niger has arrested six suspect for allegedly snatching mobile phones in the state.
SP Wasiu Abiodun, the Police Command’s spokesman, said in Minna on Tuesday that the suspects were arrested on May 4.
He said the suspects were arrested based on credible intelligence received by police operatives attached to the intelligence department of the Command.
He said that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects broke into a residence within Kutirko-Fadikpe area of Minna, carted away iPhones and Redmi note phones.
Abiodun said the suspects had confessed to the crime, and also claimed that they sold the phones to Sule Attahiru, Abdullahi Mohammed and Shamsudeen Sabiu of Rafin-Yashi, Odu’oye Quarters and Darusalam areas respectively in Minna.
Also, the spokesman said that another suspect from Badeggi, Katcha Local Government Area was arrested with a victim’s android phone while attempting to format and unlock the handset on May 6.
He said the suspect could not give a satisfactory account of the phone and was suspected to have robbed and dispossessed the owner of the gadget
He said all the suspects were under investigation.

Police Inspector detained for cutting off his pregnant wife’s hand over N3000 in Jos
A Police Inspector has been detained for allegedly cutting off his pregnant wife’s hand over N3000 in the Dong area of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The report earlier gathered that the man committed the act after his wife allegedly took N3000 out of his savings.
It was gathered that the Inspector left the money at home and when he came looking for the money, an argument ensued leading to him turning violent.
The spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, confirmed that the suspect has been picked up and the investigation is ongoing.
“We are aware of the incident, the man is an Inspector. Right now, he is at the State CID and the investigation is ongoing,” the PPRO told the Vanguard.
“He has a minor misunderstanding with his wife over some money. They had an argument over some N20,000 he kept in the house and he said he was looking for the money to do something and an argument ensued. The case is under investigation.”
A neighbour who didn’t want to be named said, “The wife is pregnant, she refused to give the man N3,000 from the N20,000. The argument was heated and before we knew it, the man cut off her hand. No one can say why he did that but we were concerned about her she was rushed to a hospital.”
