Kidnapping: FG warns Nigerians against crowdfunding ransom
The Federal Government has warned Nigerians against payment of ransom to kidnappers and bandits.
Minister of Defence, Muhammadu Badaru, who gave the warning at a press briefing after the Federal Executive Council in Abuja on Wednesday, January 17, said the payment would only embolden the culprits to demand more, thereby jeopardising public safety.
Badaru also said that President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to intensify efforts in flushing out the perpetrators of criminal acts in the society.
He said;
“Yesterday, we are aware Mr President called us and all the service chiefs to discuss this issue. So, concerted efforts is being done by security to stop it immediately.

“As you are aware, people are saying FCT, FCT, these kidnappings happen around the suburb, around locations that are bothering Kaduna and Niger states. And this is as a result of the current operations going on in the north west and some parts of north central.
“The bandits are fleeing and they are getting shelters around these areas and the security agencies are working very hard to push them out, block the movement and finish this thing once and for all.”

May Day: Nwoko backs minimum wage across board for workers
Senator Ned Nwoko (PDP-Delta), on Wednesday in Abuja expressed support for Nigerian workers’ clamour for a new minimum wage across board.
In a message to mark the international Workers Day celebration, he described Nigerian workers as valiant.
“Their ability to excel is unparalleled, especially when provided with a conducive environment to nurture their efforts and dreams.
“It is imperative that such environment is created and sustained so as to unleash the full potential of the workforce.
“I recognise the challenges the Nigerian workers face daily. I want to assure them that beyond rhetoric, we are committed to fostering an environment that promotes entrepreneurship, job creation, improved working conditions and access to quality health care.
“I firmly believe that Nigerians are among the most hardworking individuals globally; their ability to excel is unparalleled, especially when provided with a conducive environment that nurtures their efforts and dreams.
“I support an increase in the minimum wage across the board, encompassing both the private and public sectors.
“Your well-being and prosperity are paramount; I am dedicated to ensuring that your voices are heard and your concerns are addressed at the highest levels of government.
“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to each and every one of you for your unwavering dedication, resilience and hard work in driving our nation forward.
“I am deeply committed to championing policies and initiatives that support and uplift the Nigerian workforce,” he said.

FG approves salary increase for civil servants
The Federal Government has approved a substantial increase in salary ranging from 25% to 35% for civil servants across various consolidated salary structures.
This augmentation applies to the six remaining consolidated salary structures, namely the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS), and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).
A statement released by NTA on Tuesday evening, April 30 reads;
The Federal Government has approved an increase of between 25% and 35% in salary Increase for Civil Servants on the remaining six Consolidated Salary Structures
The Salary Structure is the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS) and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).
It will be recalled that those in the Tertiary Education and Health Sectors had already received their increases which involved Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) and Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS) for Universities.
For Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, it involved the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS) and Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS).
The Health Sector also benefitted through the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and Consolidated Health Sector Salary Structure (CONHESS).
A statement signed by the Head of Press, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), Emmanuel Njoku said the increases take effect from 1st January 2024.
The Federal Government has also approved increases In pension of between 20% and 28% for pensioners on the Defined Benefits Scheme in respect to the above-mentioned six consolidated salary structures with effect from 1st January 2024.

Worker’s Day: FG Declares May 1st Public Holiday
The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, 1st May, 2024 as a Public Holiday to commemorate this year’s Workers’ Day Celebration.
The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, reiterated the need for excellence, efficiency and equity in all spheres of labour, re-affirming President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to fostering a culture of innovation, productivity, and inclusivity in the workplace.
Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Aishetu Gogo Ndayako, said: “In alignment with this year’s theme, which focuses on ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate, I wish to state that the Federal Government remains steadfast in its resolve to prioritise the safety and well-being of all citizens. Let me reaffirm Mr. President’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for work, where every worker can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development”.
The Minister, while acknowledging the contribution of workers, called for proactive measures to mitigate adverse effects of climate change through synergy in in the implementation of sustainable practices and policies that promote well-being in the workplace and in building a nation guided by the principles of integrity, diligence and compassion.
Tunji-Ojo also urged Nigerians to remain committed to the present administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda as he wishes workers a happy celebration.
