“Marvin’s brilliant artistes have been catalysts in the transformation of Afrobeats into a global phenomenon and we are thrilled to welcome them into the Universal Music Group family.”Grainge said in the statement.

The statement revealed that Mavin would retain independence in shaping its strategies and nurturing future talents without external interference.

It added that TPG Records had fully exited the business while Kupanda Capital would remain minority investor and strategic adviser.

Mr Michael Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy and Founder of Mavin Records, noted that the partnership with UMG would ensure that the label keeps on achieving its goals

“I’m proud of the artistes, careers and brands we have built that have made Mavin the force it is today.

“In this historic partnership with UMG, we will continue that mission in Africa and across the globe,” Don Jazzy said.

Reacting to the development, Mr Michael Ebele, a music producer, noted that the acquisition of the record label by an international brand showed the impact of the country’s entertainment industry.

According to him, afrobeats has made entertainment industry visible to the global audience.

“First of all, I want to say a big congratulations to Don Jazzy because this is a remarkable achievement and he would be able to achieve so many things with this partnership.

“This also goes to show that our entertainment industry has achieved so many things over the years and it has made the global audience to take note of what we are doing.

“The last couple of years has seen many of our artistes featured on international artistes and we have seen several cases where the latter infuses afrobeat into their music.

“We would keep on getting better and I hope that other sectors in the country can learn from the entertainment industry,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Billboard had in October 2023, reported that Mavin Records was in the process of receiving external investment either acquiring a part of the label or an outright sale.

The investment and outright sale are valued at 125 million dollars and could rise to 150 million dollars or 200 million dollars.

The record label is home to Rema, Ayra Star, Crayon, Boy Spyce and Ladipoe, among others.

Nigeria to showcase indigenous arts, artists at 2024 Venice Biennale – Minister

The Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, says Nigeria will participate at the Venice Biennale, scheduled for April 16 to April 18 in Italy.

Musawa, through her media aide, Nneka Anibeze, said ahead of the event, the Nigerian pavilion had been set.

She said this would serve as a platform for Nigerian artists to exhibit their works at the international stage, allowing them to reach a global audience and gain recognition for their talent.

“For the Ministry of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy, the inclusion of the Nigerian pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2024 holds immense significance.

“It is an opportunity to leverage the platform to strengthen Nigeria’s cultural ties with other nations, fostering mutual respect, appreciation and collaboration in arts.

“One of the highlights of the Venice Biennale is the national pavilions, which represent different countries and showcase their artists’ works.

“Each country’s pavilion offers a unique perspective on contemporary art, reflecting the cultural diversity and artistic practices of its nation.

“Nigeria’s pavilion serves as a catalyst for conversations around Nigerian arts and culture, promoting dialogue and understanding between different cultures and societies.

“Our collective aim is to position Nigeria as the world’s culture, creativity and entertainment capital,” she said.

Musawa, who said that the theme for the exhibition is ‘Foreigners Everywhere’, added that pavilion exhibitions would be at the historic Palazzo Salviati in Dorsoduro, near the Gallerie dell’Accademia and would feature eight Nigerian artists.

She said the artists include: Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, Ndidi Dike, Onyeka Igwe, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Abraham Oghobase, Yinka Shonibare, Fatimah Tuggar, and Precious Okoyomon.

She said that Okoyomon’s contribution to the main exhibition at the 2022 edition made her a breakout star.

“Nigeria’s Pavilion will serve as a springboard for future collaborations, exchanges, and partnerships within the global art community.

“The Federal Ministry of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy is partnering MOWAA to empower cultural professionals to thrive in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

“Africa will be represented by ten countries including Nigeria, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
